Last week, the Executive Committee of the NJSIAA approved a two-year rule modificationthat puts an end to ties and co-champions in state soccer finals.
The new setup will go into effect in this fall and comes a year after three girls soccer state finals ended in draws. Under the new provision, penalty-kick shootouts will be used in state finals to break ties and determine an outright champion.
Reaction from coaches who have recently earned co-championships is decidedly mixed. Click the link below to see what coaches had to say about the switch to penalty kicks.
